TradeUpBC, an initiative created and funded by the British Columbia Ministry of Post-Secondary and Future Skills (PSFS), is dedicated to showcasing a diverse range of short courses and programs from institutes across the province.
Our primary goal is to enhance accessibility and development opportunities for experienced trades professionals throughout BC. Our platform is strategically designed to address economic disparities within the industry. We are committed to providing post-secondary opportunities tailored to seven Areas of Demand to bridge the economic gap. TradeUpBC helps experienced trade professionals and employers stay resilient, adaptable, and inclusive.
The Ministry of PSFS has identified limited opportunities for certified trade professionals and employers to access ongoing learning, which has resulted in a gap between these professionals and the evolving skill demands of the industry. Initially, six Areas of Demand were identified, with a seventh added a year later. These Areas of Demand represent the trades industry gaps that need to be bridged with further skill development and education, including Changes in Technology, Climate Change Impacts, Leadership Skills Development, Business Skills, Inclusive Workplaces, Educator Training, and Advanced Safety Skills.
To address these Areas of Demand, the Ministry created TradeUpBC. The initiative began in May 2023 with the announcement of the StrongerBC: Future Ready Action Plan. Since then, the program has been led by the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). The initiative started as a webpage under the institute's website, and two months later, it migrated to an official website as a main course hub.
TradeUpBC offers a wide range of trades-related courses, including construction skills training, manufacturing and industrial courses, transportation and marine trades programs, sustainability and renewable energy training, and professional development microcredentials.
